Sacramento Boudoir Photography: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

So you’ve been thinking about doing a boudoir photoshoot.

Maybe you’ve been stalking photographers on Instagram for the last six months. Maybe you’ve got a whole Pinterest board dedicated to it. Or maybe you saw a photo of someone and thought, “Okay, I want pictures like THAT of myself.”

And then the questions start.

What the hell do I wear? Am I supposed to know how to pose? Do I need to show up looking like a Victoria’s Secret model? Is this going to be awkward?

First of all, no. Well, maybe a little awkward for the first five minutes. You’re meeting a stranger who’s about to photograph you in your underwear. I’d be a little concerned if you weren’t at least somewhat nervous. LOL.

I’m Heather, the photographer behind Heather Elizabeth Intimate Portraits in Midtown Sacramento. I’ve been photographing women for years, and I promise you, I’ve heard just about every question imaginable.

So let’s get into it.

What Even Is Boudoir Photography?

When people hear “boudoir,” they usually picture lingerie, a bed, and someone dramatically staring into the camera.

And sure, sometimes that’s exactly what we’re doing.

But boudoir can be so much more than that.

I photograph women in lingerie, oversized sweaters, jeans, button-down shirts, beautiful dresses, and sometimes absolutely nothing at all.

I’m much more interested in creating beautiful portraits than checking off some imaginary list of what boudoir is supposed to look like.

My work is a little moody, a little editorial, sometimes romantic, sometimes sexy. I love beautiful light, interesting textures, and photographs that look like they belong in a magazine.

And I want your photographs to look like YOU.

Not some overly airbrushed version of you that your own mother wouldn’t recognize.

“But Heather, I Have NO Idea How to Pose.”

GOOD. Because that’s literally what you’re paying me for. 😂

Seriously, you don’t need to know a single thing about posing.

You don’t need to practice in the mirror. You don’t need to study Pinterest poses. You definitely don’t need to know what to do with your hands.

I will tell you exactly what to do.

Where to put your hands. Which way to turn your shoulders. Where to look. How to move your chin. All of it.

Sometimes I’ll make the tiniest adjustment, and suddenly the entire photograph changes.

And yes, occasionally I’ll demonstrate a pose myself, which is probably worth the price of admission alone.

I don’t expect you to show up knowing how to model. I expect you to show up, hang out with me, and let me do my job.

Okay, So What Do I Wear?

Honestly? Whatever makes sense for the photographs we’re creating.

You do NOT have to go spend $500 at a lingerie store before your session.

If you love lingerie, bring it! I love a beautiful bodysuit or matching set.

But you know what else photographs beautifully?

  • Your favorite oversized band tee
  • A button-down shirt
  • A leather jacket
  • A really great pair of jeans
  • A blazer with nothing underneath
  • A pretty robe
  • A simple bodysuit
  • A sweater that falls off one shoulder

Sometimes the simplest outfits make my favorite photographs.

I want you to bring pieces that feel like you. Not what you think you’re supposed to wear to a boudoir session.

We’ll go over all of this before your photoshoot, so don’t worry about figuring it out alone.

And please, for the love of everything, try your outfits on BEFORE the morning of your session. 😉

What Actually Happens at Your Boudoir Session?

Okay, let’s walk through it because I know some of you are planners.

First, We Chat.

Before anything gets booked, we’ll talk about what you’re looking for, what kind of photographs you love, and what the whole experience looks like.

We’ll also go over pricing because I don’t believe in having someone show up for a photoshoot and then be completely blindsided by the investment afterward.

I want you to know what you’re getting into.

Then We Plan Your Photoshoot.

We’ll talk about outfits, styling, and what kind of mood you’re going for.

Maybe you’re a soft, romantic, pretty-lace kind of girl.

Maybe you’re more of a leather-jacket-and-rock-‘n’-roll kind of girl.

Or maybe you’re both. I certainly am.

Hair and Makeup!

For sessions that include professional hair and makeup, you’ll get to sit down, relax, and let someone else do the work for a bit.

We’ll make sure the look works with your personal style and the photographs we’re creating.

I still want you to look like yourself. Just with really fabulous hair and makeup.

Then We Shoot!

This is usually the part everyone is nervous about.

And then about ten minutes in, we’re chatting, laughing, and you’re realizing that this is actually pretty fun.

I’ll guide you through everything. We’ll change outfits, play with different lighting and poses, and create a variety of photographs.

You don’t need to perform or pretend to be someone you’re not.

And if something doesn’t feel comfortable, tell me. This is your session, and we’re creating these photographs together.

Finally, You Get to See Your Photographs.

This is my favorite part.

At your portrait reveal, you’ll get to see what we created and choose the images you want to take home.

We’ll go through your favorites and decide what makes sense for your album, wall art, or other artwork.

And yes, sometimes choosing is the hardest part of the entire experience. Sorry in advance. LOL.

“Are You Going to Photoshop Me Into a Completely Different Person?”

Nope.

Look, I love Photoshop. It’s a wonderful tool.

But I don’t want to photograph you and then spend hours turning you into someone who doesn’t exist.

I’ll clean up temporary blemishes, little distractions, and things that don’t need to be there.

But I’m not interested in erasing every line, freckle, or detail that makes your face yours.

A lot of what people think is Photoshop is actually good lighting, good posing, and knowing what I’m doing with a camera.

Wild concept, I know. 😂

I want you to look at your portraits and recognize yourself.

“Am I Too Old for Boudoir?”

Oh, PLEASE.

Absolutely not.

I’ve photographed women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, and some of my favorite sessions have been with women who have a whole lot of life behind them.

There is no expiration date on being photographed.

You don’t need to be 25. You don’t need to be getting married. You don’t need to have some huge life event happening.

You can literally just want beautiful photographs of yourself.

That’s allowed.

How Much Does Boudoir Photography Cost in Sacramento?

Ahhh, the question everyone wants to know. LOL.

And it’s a fair question!

Boudoir photography can vary quite a bit in price depending on what you’re looking for.

Some photographers offer quick sessions with a few digital images. Others offer a more customized experience with professional hair and makeup, multiple outfits, and finished artwork.

My studio focuses on the entire experience, from planning your session to creating photographs you’ll actually want to print and keep.

I’m also a HUGE believer in printed photographs.

Don’t get me wrong, I love having digital images. But there’s just something about opening a beautiful album filled with your portraits.

It’s a completely different experience than scrolling through them on your phone.

We go over the session fee and artwork collections during your consultation, so you know exactly how everything works before making a decision.

How Do You Choose a Boudoir Photographer in Sacramento?

Okay, this is important.

There are a lot of photographers out there, and we’re not all the same.

And that’s a GOOD thing.

Some photographers create very bright, airy, romantic photographs. Others are darker and moodier. Some focus on traditional lingerie photography, while others lean more into fashion and editorial portraits.

Start by looking at their actual work.

And I don’t mean one pretty photo on Instagram.

Look through their portfolio. Look at different clients. Pay attention to how they use light, how they pose people, and how their photographs are edited.

Ask questions!

Do they help you with posing? Do they help with outfits? What’s included? How much are the photographs afterward?

And most importantly, do you actually LIKE their style?

Because if you love bright and airy photographs and you book someone whose entire portfolio is dark and dramatic, you’re probably not going to get what you had in mind.

Find someone whose photographs make you think, “THAT. That’s what I want.”

Even if that photographer isn’t me.

Yes, I said it. LOL.

So, Are We Doing This or What?

If you’ve made it this far, I’m guessing you’ve been thinking about a boudoir photoshoot for a while.

My studio is located in Midtown Sacramento, and I photograph women from all over the area, including Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom, Davis, and beyond.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before contacting me.

You can have a whole vision planned, or you can just tell me, “Heather, I want some really beautiful photographs of myself, and I have absolutely no idea where to start.”

I can work with that.

In fact, I hear it all the time.

So if you’re ready to chat about creating something together, I’d love to hear from you.
