Sacramento Boudoir Client Feature: Seeing Herself Differently

FILED IN: boudoir

Featured Client: Rochelle. Learning to See Yourself Through a Kinder Lens

There is something I hear from women all the time before their boudoir session:

“I’m nervous.”

And honestly? I would probably be more surprised if you weren’t a little nervous.

Most of the women I photograph aren’t models. They don’t spend their weekends lounging around in lingerie while someone takes their picture. 😂 For many of them, this is completely outside of their comfort zone.

That was true for this beautiful woman, too.

She came into my Sacramento studio for her 40 Over 40 portrait session, and this was her first experience being photographed like this. She had nerves. She had insecurities. She had all of those little thoughts so many of us have about our bodies and how we’re going to look in photographs.

But she also had a reason for being there.

Doing Something Just for Herself

When I asked why she decided to participate in my 40 Over 40 project, her answer was simple:

She wanted to finally do something for herself.

I LOVE that.

As women, it can be so easy to spend years putting ourselves somewhere near the bottom of the list. There is always something else that needs our attention. Work. Family. Relationships. Responsibilities. The never-ending list of things we should be doing. In her career, she was a security guard so she never got the chance most days to tap into her femininity. A mom and wife who spent so much time taking photos of the people she loved but not taking the time to celebrate herself.

Somewhere along the way, we start telling ourselves that celebrating ourselves can wait.

Until we lose the weight.

Until we feel more confident.

Until life calms down.

Until someday.

But what if you didn’t have to wait until you became some future version of yourself to celebrate the woman you are right now?

“I Was Able to Let Go of My Insecurities”

One of the things she shared with me afterward was:

“Heather made me feel comfortable and safe. She created such a supportive environment that I was able to let go of my insecurities and simply enjoy the moment.”

THIS is why the experience matters so much to me.

You don’t have to walk through my studio door already feeling confident.

You don’t have to know what to do with your hands. You don’t have to know your angles. You don’t have to magically transform into someone who loves being in front of a camera.

That part is my job.

I will guide you through everything—from the tiny adjustments in your hands to where you’re looking, how you’re breathing, and yes, even what to do with your face. 😂

Your only job is to show up.

And somewhere during the session, something tends to shift.

The nerves start disappearing.

You stop thinking quite so much about what your body looks like.

You start laughing.

You start having fun.

And sometimes, you start seeing yourself a little differently.

Seeing Herself Through a Kinder Lens

After her session, she told me:

“Despite all of my doubts and insecurities, I walked out feeling more beautiful and confident than I ever have before.”

That sentence means everything to me.

Because as much as I love creating beautiful photographs—and trust me, I REALLY love creating beautiful photographs—the bigger purpose behind this work has always been how you feel when you see them.

So many women have spent years looking at themselves through an incredibly critical lens. As I like to call it looking at ourselves through “shit stained glasses”.

We notice the things we wish were smaller. Firmer. Smoother. Younger. Different.

We pick ourselves apart in ways we would NEVER pick apart someone we love.

Sometimes it takes seeing yourself from another perspective to realize how unfair you’ve been to the woman in the mirror.

Her favorite part of this experience wasn’t suddenly becoming a different woman.

It was recognizing the beauty that was already there.

The Greatest Gift She Gave Herself

She described her session as “one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever given myself.”

Not because she needed photographs to prove that she was beautiful.

But because she gave herself permission to celebrate herself exactly as she is.

And that’s what I want for every woman who walks into my Sacramento boudoir studio.

I don’t want you waiting until you’re thinner.

Or younger.

Or more confident.

Or less nervous.

Or until you’ve somehow finally become “good enough” to deserve to be photographed.

You already are.

And maybe, like this incredible woman, you just need the chance to see yourself through a kinder, more loving lens.

If you’ve been thinking about doing a boudoir session but keep telling yourself you’re not ready yet, I’d love to talk to you.

Come exactly as you are.

I’ll take care of the rest. 🤍 Go right here to sign up for your free Sacramento Boudoir Photoshoot consultation.
